PhD in Computer Science and Information Systems, 2005
University of Jyvaskyla, Finland
Mykola Pechenizkiy is Associate Professor in Predictive Analytics, affiliated with the Web Engineering group, Information Systems Section at the Department of Computer Science, Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e), the Netherlands. He received his PhD (Feature Extraction for Supervised Learning in Knowledge Discovery Systems) from the Computer Science and Information Systems department at the University of Jyvaskyla, Finland in 2005. After a short postdoc he joined TU/e in 2006 as an Assistant Professor. Mykola has broad expertise and research interests in knowledge discovery, data mining, predictive analytics and data-driven intelligence, and particularly in their application to various real world problems. Recent focuses are brought by challenges recognized in a wide range of (adaptive) information systems serving industry, commerce, medicine and education and dealing with evolving (streaming) data. He develops generic frameworks and effective approaches for designing adaptive, context-aware predictive analytics systems. He has co-authored about 100 peer-reviewed publications and co-organized several workshops (HaCDAIS@ECMLPKDD2010 & @ICDM2011, LEMEDS@AIME2011), conferences (IEEE CBMS 2008, BNAIC 2009, EDM 2015 and EDM 2011, IEEE CBMS 2012) and tutorials (at IEEE CBMS 2010, ECML/PKDD 2010, PAKDD 2011, ECML/PKDD 2012) in these areas. Recently, he has co-edited the Handbook of Educational Data Mining and served as a guest editor of the special issues with SIGKDD Explorations (ACM), Evolving Systems (Springer), Data and Knowledge Engineering (Elsevier) and Artificial Intelligence in Medicine (Elsevier) journals. He has been taking a leading role in NWO HaCDAIS, STW CAPA, EIT ICT Labs Stress@Work, NL Agency CoDAK and Surf CurriM projects. He has also actively collaborated with industry through nationally-funded and MSc thesis projects; in particular with Adversitement, ASML, C-Content, Multiscope, Philips Research, Sanoma Media Group, Sligro Food Group, StudyPortals, Teezir, VTT. Mykola has been a research visitor to several universities, including Aalto University, U. Bournemouth, Columbia University, U. Cordoba, U. Jyvaskyla, Nanyang Technological University, New York University, U. Porto, U. Portsmouth, Simon Fraiser U., U. Sydney, Trinity College Dublin, and U. Ulster. Since June 2013 he is also Adjunct Professor (Dosentti) in Data Mining for Industrial Applications at the Department of the Mathematical Information Technology, University of Jyväskylä. For the period of 2015-2017 he is acting as the President of the IEDMS. Mykola’s other interests are in philosophy of mind, general problems of human and artificial intelligence, learning, and cognitive psychology. His hobbies include chess, sport and outdoor activities and travelling.
